Where We Started
For the Molina family, great Mexican food and warm hospitality have always been a way of life. It all started in 1947 when Gilbert Molina built the first family Mexican restaurant, Casa Molina, for his sister Maria in Tucson, Arizona. He didn’t just open a restaurant—he literally built it from the ground up, crafting the adobe structure and even making the furniture by hand. His passion for food and innovation led him to invent a taco maker that shaped corn tortillas, a small but mighty contribution to the legacy of Sonoran-style cuisine. Over the years, Gilbert’s children followed in his footsteps, opening their own restaurants and carrying on the family tradition across southern Arizona.
Founded in 1977
In 1977, Gilbert’s daughter Margaret, along with her husband Wayne and their son Wayne Jr., opened El Molinito Mexican Restaurants on 22nd Street. Staying true to Gilbert’s dedication to homemade Mexican food, El Molinito made their own tortillas fresh, ensuring every dish is made with the same care and tradition that started it all.
